Chiang Dao was built in 1767, also called Wat Tham Luang Chiang Dao. The construction was started by the monk Pratham Punya Wisdom and Phor Sanpee. Later, in 1887, Phraya Intaphban built a staircase to reach the cave entrance along with a lodging and other art works. In 1913, there was a hermit named Kantha who built a Buddha image. Until 1934, the monk Srivichai rebuilt and renovated it. In addition, in later times, more lodgings were built and renovated. It was granted for the royal charter on August 23, 1971.
